Connectivity Over Fiber to Front Gates, Docks, Garages, and Other Buildings

Connectivity Over Fiber to Front Gates, Docks, Garages, and Other Buildings

Front gates, docks, garages, and other buildings on your client’s property are great locations to extend network, A/V systems, and locate cameras. But using copper for connectivity either won’t work (too far), introduces noise, or exposes systems to potential voltage surges and lighting strikes. Here are several versatile solutions for bringing technology to just about anyplace you can imagine.

We carry a special breed of network switch that is made to work in remote and exterior locations called a “hardened, industrial switch”. These rugged products have a wide operating temperature range (from -40 degrees to +160 degrees) and be located in our of Altelix NEMA rated exterior enclosures.

Design Notes:

  1. The ROBOfiber Hardened Industrial Switches come in 2-port, 4-port, 8-port, and 16-port models. In addition, each model comes in a PoE+ or non-PoE and managed or unmanaged version.
    1. The PoE+ versions are limited to the following:
    2. The 2-port version has 60w available – to a maximum of 30w (PoE+) per port
    3. The 4-port version has 120w available – to a maximum of 30w (PoE+) per port
    4. The 8-port version has 240w available – to a maximum of 30w (PoE+) per port
    5. The 8-port BT version has 480w available – to a maximum of 90w (PoE++) per port
    6. The 16-port version has 240w available – to a maximum of 30w (PoE+) per port
  2. You will need a power supply for each switch in your design – choose a 40w, 60w, 100w, 120w, 240w, or 480w model, depending on the power requirments of the PoE, Poe+, or Poe++ devices you are using with the switch
    • The power supplies come as a kit that includes a 6in DIN rail (long enought to mount the power supply and the switch) and a 6ft grounded power cord that can be trimmed to length before connecting to the hot (+), neutral (-), and ground on the power supply.
  3. The 2-port and 4-port models have (1) SFP slot; the 8-port model has (2) SFP slots; the 16-port models have up to (8) SFP slots. You can “daisy-chain” several units (mix and match) for example:
    • Run fiber from a switch at the main equipment rack in the house to the garage; use the 8-port switch there for a wireless acces point, cameras, etc.; come out of the second SFP slot and run fiber to a front gate and use the 2-port switch for a gate controller/door station and a camera.
  4. Single mode fiber and connectors for runs up to and over 1000 feet are highly recommended.
  5. The Solution Product List below has plenum rated fiber listed. Cleerline’s plenum rated jackets are indoor/outdoor wet-rated for use in conduit.
  6. We recommend using Rugged Micro Distribution (RMD) cable in conduit, and direct-burial rated jacket for dropping into the soil and burying it.
